DANGER IS REAL! Fear is an option

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

COVID-19! The disease at the fore-front of almost every person’s mind and striking fear into people’s hearts. It’s the most trending topic in the news and social media. How are you feeling about this? Are you aware that whatever your feeling is, that’s going to affect how you respond to the threat?

With the ongoing pandemic, how do you feel about your personal safety? Do you wish to keep yourself away from the disease? Do you want to stay healthy?

Are you aware of the dangers that the disease poses? Do you feel fearful about it? Feeling fearful, how does that serve you?

Danger versus Fear

DANGER IS REAL. Standing at the ledge of a high-rise building; there is the real danger of falling. Being in an enclosure of wild lions; there is the real danger of being attacked by the lion. Driving at excessive speed on the highway; there is the real danger of a traffic accident.

When you face a dangerous situation, it is normal and healthy for you to feel fearful. Fear is just a feedback mechanism to inform you of impending danger. Fear is your emotion telling you “HEY! THIS IS DANGEROUS!” The purpose of it is so that you will take the necessary steps to remove yourself from the danger; move away from the ledge or get out of the enclosure or slow down. Once you recognise the danger, fear is not necessary any more. It has served its purpose.

For you to distance yourself from the danger, you need to keep calm and level-headed. You need to think critically to brainstorm, plan and take evasive actions. In this way, will you remain resourceful and productive? Should you remain fearful, do you think that you’ll be effective in doing these?

Other than the health threat, COVID-19 also threatens your economic livelihood. With the Movement Control in place, how many people will not have the means to pursue their livelihood? How many businesses aren’t able to continue? Fear is the last thing you need right now, otherwise, you’ll not be able to overcome these challenges.

How Do We Stop the Fear?

Stop consuming or disseminating news or information from unknown sources. Read from only credible authorities on health.

What Do We Know About COVID-19?

  • Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus.

  • The disease causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. You can protect yourself by washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, and avoiding close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with unwell people.

How Do You Keep Yourself Away from the Danger?

Tips from the World Health Organization:

  • Wash your hands frequently.

  • Avoid touching your face.

  • Sneeze and cough into a tissue or your elbow.

  • Avoid crowds and standing near others.

  • Stay home if you think you might be sick.

  • If you have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, follow the advice given by your government's health authority.

Social distancing and maintaining personal hygiene will minimise the risk of infection. Not adhering to that will increase the risk of infection. Most countries have implemented Movement Control measures to flatten the curve of the pandemic so that infection cases do not exceed public health capacity. Follow these measures!
